Game 3 20.4.09 Acres Boys Club Cup Rd 2 Referee; Allan Macleod Ness 1 v 2 Lochs (H.T. 1-0) Scorers; Lochs – Roddy Morrison, Robert Mackenzie Ness - ? Lochs Team (3-5-2) Christie Campbell Niall Gibson, Alex “Tippex” Maciver, Ali Mackenzie Peter Mackenzie, Andy Murray, John “Uig” Morrison, David Macmillan, Robert Mackenzie Don “Lava” Macleod, Roddy Morrison Substitutes Peter “Robbie” Mackenzie not used Jonathan Smith not used Cameron Houston not used Ali Macdonald not used Football is indeed a strange and unpredictable game as the first half of this Acres Boys Club Cup game at Fivepenny, Ness proved. Lochs, having played their best passing football of the season so far, having had ten efforts on target, having hit the crossbar and had another effort smothered by the Ness keeper on the line, having forced ten corners and having seen several other efforts go wide of the target, went in at half time 1-0 down to a poor Ness side. Football is however about scoring goals and the Niseachs scored one of only two shots on target in the first half. Into the second half and an early goal from Roddy Morrison should have settled Lochs down. Instead in spurred Ness on to play some of their better football of the game. They came closer to scoring when a right footed drive from the right side of the box narrowly missed the target. Ness were dangerous on the break and again could have scored when a header was sent just past the Lochs keeper’s left hand post. Lochs did stamp their authority on the game and had most of the possession but the closest they came to scoring was when an Andy Murray effort came back of the post. The game appeared to be heading to extra-time when Lochs were awarded a free kick outside the Ness box. Quick thinking by David Macmillan saw him pass the ball to an unmarked Robert Mackenzie on the left side of the Ness penalty box. Robert, in a good deal of space, smashed the ball into the net to secure a semi-final spot for the Lochies. Shots on Target Shots off Target Corners Lochs 16 18 16 Ness 3 4 0
Game 2 17.3.09 League Carloway 1 v 3 Lochs (H.T. 1-3) Referee, Donald J. Maclean Scorers; Lochs- Roddy Morrison, David Martin, Peter Mackenzie Carloway- Alex Smith Lochs Team (3-5-2) David Black Alex “Tippex” Maciver, Robert Mackenzie, Ali Mackenzie Peter Mackenzie, David Macmillan, John “Uig” Morrison, Andy Murray, David Martin Don “Lava” Macleod, Roddy Morrison Substitutes Cameron Houston not used Peter “Robbie” Mackenzie not used Christie Campbell not used Ali Macdonald for Roddy Morrison (85 min) A fine if cold night in Carloway brought out a large crowd to see what promised to be an entertaining match. With Niall Gibson away on the mainland Alex “Tippex” Maciver deputized in defence for Lochs and David Black made his first start of the season in goals. Otherwise the Lochs team was unchanged from the side that defeated West Side last week. Both sides started brightly and the first Lochs chance fell to David Martin who drove his shot wide of the keeper’s left hand post. Carloway were unlucky not to take the lead in 12mins when first Black made a good save and from the resulting clearance a clever drive hit the frame of the Lochs goal. The class act on the field in the first period was Andy Murray of Lochs and it was fitting that it was his clever dribble to the Carloway goal line and subsequent cut back that left Roddy Morrison with the simple task of side footing the ball home to give Lochs the lead. This produced a good response from Carloway and they had one of their best spells of the match culminating in Alex Smith firing home a spectacular equalizer on the 25th minute. Another excellent run from Andy Murray ended with a pass to David Martin whose drive put Lochs back in front on the half hour. Then on the stroke of half time David Macmillan supplied the back post cross which Peter Mackenzie headed home to give Lochs a deserved 3-1 interval lead. The second half did not produce any more goals and the football was not as entertaining as in the first period. Highlights of the period was a John “Uig” rocket which crashed off the crossbar and a flashing drive from Carloway which went wide of Black’s right hand post. A good game in which Lochs deserved the points but Carloway again showed that their young team is continuing to make progress.

Game 1 10.4.09 League Lochs 2 v 1 West Side (H.T. 1-1) Referee, Ali “Suggan” Maclean Scorers; Lochs- Don “Lava” Macleod, Andy Murray West Side- Dan Macphail Lochs Team (3-5-2) Team Christie Campbell Niall Gibson, Robert Mackenzie, Ally Mackenzie Peter Mackenzie, David Macmillan, John “Uig” Morrison, Andy Murray, David Martin Don “Lava” Macleod, Roddy Morrison Substitutes Graeme Mackenzie for Roddy Morrison Cameron Houston not used Peter “Robbie” Mackenzie not used Jonathan Smith for Peter Mackenzie Ali Macdonald not used On a cold and windy Friday night a good sized crowd, swelled by players and supporters from Aths, Carloway and Back, gathered at Sgoil nan Loch for the opening match of the season at home to West Side. They witnessed a hard fought, competitive match which West Side, despite having lost some of their squad from last season, kept alive right to the final whistle. Lochs took the lead through Don “Lava” Macleod midway through the first half but just before half time Dan Macphail equalized for West Side. With the wind behind them in the second period Lochs dominated possession but West Side were very dangerous on the break. Only in flashes did Lochs show their true passing game. One of these occasions produced a fluid passing move which ended in Don “Lava” Macleod heading narrowly wide. The winning goal, when it came, was a clever piece of invention from the two class acts on the pitch David Macmillan and Andy Murray. Lochs were awarded a free kick just outside the West Side penalty box. With everyone waiting for David to attempts to beat the defensive wall he passed the ball to the unmarked Andy Murray who calmly drove it into the net to secure the victory. Further chances were missed by Lochs and at the final whistle the side was relieved to pick up all three points to give new manager Robbie Mackenzie his first victory. Duncan N Macleod |
