Scotland’s environment watchdog is waiving its registration fee for septic tanks until 31 May. Registration normally attracts a one-off fee of £74, but the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is suspending the fee for until the end of May. This means people whose properties have septic tanks can register for the cost of a phone call, postage stamp or, if they apply online, just £1. Well managed septic tanks in appropriate conditions provide suitable sewage treatment without damaging the environment. Poorly maintained tanks can, however, cause pollution and significant problems for neighbouring properties and communities. “It saves septic tank owners money and it encourages owners to ensure their tank is legally registered, an important consideration when it comes to buying and selling properties. “It also raises awareness of the importance of looking after septic tanks. “We originally introduced a temporary waiver of some of our fees back in November as part of our contribution to the Government’s economic recovery programme. “That waiver ran until the end of March, but towards the end of the month we had a last minute rush of interest. “Such was the demand that some of our switchboards were jammed with calls, and I want to offer SEPA?s sincere apology for any inconvenience caused. “In the last few days we have sought and received Scottish Government approval so I am pleased to announce that we are extending our waiver of the normal fee for septic tank registration until 31 May.
