Plans Officially Lodged for Inter-connector
Community News
Plans to build a huge sub-sea interconnector cable to export electricity from giant wind farms on Lewis to the mainland have been lodged to the Scottish Government.

The massive sub-sea cable would run from a huge convertor station in Gravir, South Lochs, down the hillside and under a salmon farm to reach out the mouth of Loch Odhairn sealoch.

It would be laid on the seabed to across the Minch to landfall at Dundonnell at the head of Little Loch Broom. Cabling would then run to Beauly, west of Inverness. A separate upgrade of the Beauly to Falkirk grid is being sought.

Primary Schools Face Closure
Community News
Many Western Isles Primary schools face the stark threat of closure with a warning today that crunch decisions will have to be made in the near future.

Western Isles Council is to fully review all the island 38 primary schools and report back by March 2009.

Consultation on an undefined number of closures is expected to proceed in Spring.

Education director Murdo Macleod said that the islands' pupil numbers have fallen dramatically.

The "challenge is to have an appropriate number of schools for the number of pupils we have."

He pointed out that urban areas would have just four primaries and two secondaries compared to nearly 40 units in the rural Hebrides with the optimum number for the islands somewhere between these two extremes.

He said: "It is that optimum number we have to try to identify."

However, the council's recent controversial decision to reprieve seven rural secondary schools until 2011 has made it more difficult to shut some primaries as pupils could have simply been relocated into the empty secondary classrooms.

Parliamentary Crofting Debate -Shucksmith Report
Council News

Speaking after the speech by Michael Russell MSP, Minister for Environment, on the Scottish Government’s response to the Shucksmith Inquiry into Crofting, Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, commented:
“The Shucksmith proposals met with broad approval, though I am pleased that the Minister has listened to the representations which I and many others made about Professor Shucksmith's proposals on Burdens. Most crofters will agree that Burdens ran the risk of creating a two-tier housing market in crofting districts. The Government's proposals achieve, I hope, a better balance of interests.
"There was also welcome evidence that the government has heard the concerns that many crofters had about the proposal to abolish the Crofting Commission. The Commission will now continue, though with a greater proportion of elected crofters running it, and it will be advised on local needs by area committees.
