Mass U-turn to reprieve closed schools |
|
Community News

In a mass midnight U-turn by the council, all the closed Western Isles rural secondary schools are to remain open until further notice.
After a late night vote, councillors reversed earlier decisions to shut the islands’ S1/ S2 schools.
The reprieve came at nearly midnight - just two hours after the same councillors took the conflicting action to shut Back secondary.
Reduced government funding, falling pupil numbers and the changing curriculum have been hailed as importance reasons to get rid of all seven secondary units. |

The Scottish Government has rubber stamped planning permission for 13 giant wind turbines on Lewis.
Official confirmation on the £ 45 million scheme is expected to be issued within days via Western Isles Council.
The Feiriosbhal scheme is the only major wind farm in the Hebrides to be approved.
It is a sub-set of the larger 53-machine Eisgein which is the focus of an ongoing public inquiry. Taken from BBC News Website http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/highlands_and_islands/7450162.stm |

A controversial giant wind farm has been approved for the third time by Western Isles Council.
The support for the 53 turbine scheme at Eisgein in South Lochs, Lewis, comes just three weeks before a public inquiry is held into the contentious development.
The planning application was before councillors for the third time on Thursday as fresh environmental information had to be considered before the inquiry commences.
Developer Nick Oppenheim applied for 133 turbines. He later slashed this figure to 57 machines and the council knocked out four.
Around 87% of people surveyed in the surrounding Kinloch district said they are against it.

Council Vote to Close Sgoil nan Loch |
|
Community News
|
The axe fell on two Western Isles schools today (Thurs) despite last minute bids to save them. Lochs secondary on Lewis and Paible secondary on North Uist are the latest to be sacrificed to help fund a £5 million deficit in developing five new centralised schools under a private partnership deal. The council stresses that other reasons include the difficulties in delivering the changing curriculum, less government funding, falling pupil numbers and the subsequent fall in finance from Edinburgh. |

Education Committee vote for Closure |

Axe falls Sgoil nan Loch Secondary Dept The axe fell on four Western Isles schools when education councillors voted to close the rural secondaries at Sgoil nan Loch, Lewis, and Paible on North Uist.
In addition Cliasmol Primary school in Harris and Craigston Primary School on Barra will shut in just two months. Craigston pupils have the choice of transferring to Castlebay or Eoiligarry while those at Cliasmol will now go to Sir E Scott in Tarbert.
Today’s decisions will have to be ratified by the full council but there seems to be very little chance of a reprieve.
The four are the latest in a series of schools under threat to pay for the cash shortfall for new private partnership school buildings.
