Sceptic Tank Compulsory Registration

Scotland’s environment watchdog is waiving its registration fee for septic tanks until 31 May.

Registration normally attracts a one-off fee of £74, but the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is suspending the fee for until the end of May.

This means people whose properties have septic tanks can register for the cost of a phone call, postage stamp or, if they apply online, just £1.

The register of septic tanks provides SEPA with information about sewage treatment systems in areas of Scotland not connected to main sewer networks. This helps the development of long term strategies for protecting Scotland’s environment.

The Western Isles is revealed as an exceptional wildlife haven featuring some extraordinary animal behaviour in a new study of its bird life funded by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).

The 10th Outer Hebrides Bird Report is packed with information on the area’s resident and visiting bird species gathered over two years by bird experts, enthusiasts and local people across the length and breadth of the Western Isles.

The report’s 240 pages cover the populations and movements of all the islands resident birds and exotic visitors across the four seasons.

It highlights detailed individual records of sightings and photographs contributed by ornithologists, amateur birdwatchers, local crofters, fishermen and visiting holiday makers.

The book reveals fascinating insights into the struggle for survival between birds and animals throughout the islands.

Blue Tongue Vaccination Programme

The Scottish Government is implementing a vaccination campaign against bluetongue virus for all susceptible animals in Scotland. To allow this, Scotland will be declared a ‘Protection Zone’ from Monday 3 November 2008.

It will be compulsory for all sheep and cattle in Scotland to be vaccinated within the vector-free period (3rd November 2008 – 30th April 2009).
